A Dream in the Making
15 July 1967: The British Grand Prix, Silverstone. The second race of the day was the International Sports Car Race — ten laps, 60 miles and a first prize of £100. Supporting the over 2000cc class were nine GT40s. Watching this race, a young man just shy of 27 years of age, I became fascinated by these beautiful cars. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would one day build a replica...
Fast forward 34 years to March 2001. Having recently retired, I felt the time was right to rekindle my love for the GT40. With the experience of building an AC Cobra under my belt, I figured the GT40 would be a similarly relaxed affair. Lesson one: presume nothing. With a visit to GTD Supercars, I struck a deal — and the wheels of my dream were set in motion.
And so it began
Within weeks of placing my order, I received the CAV chassis and body (selected mainly because GTD were offering a good deal). Here I encountered my first problem: the supplied photocopy of the build manual did not relate to the CAV chassis. Specifically, my problems lay with the design of the front and rear suspension anchorage points, and the fixing of the gear box cradle to the chassis.
